VALERO RENEWABLE DIESEL
Following significant investment at our Cardiff terminal, Valero Energy Ltd will shortly start marketing renewable diesel in the UK.
Our equity renewable diesel is manufactured in the US, through our Diamond Green Diesel partnership with Darling Ingredients Inc. Following the recent removal of import duties, we now intend to sell our renewable diesel made from UK-qualifying wastes.
Our first cargo is expected to reach Cardiff early March 2023, with sales commencing soon after.
Following the opening of our latest facility in Port Arthur Texas, annual production capacity is expected to reach 4.5 billion litres, making us one of the largest producers of renewable diesel in the world and a reliable source of product for our customers.
Valero Energy Corporation is the world's largest independent refiner and a major producer of low-carbon liquid fuels and has built a portfolio that includes renewable diesel, renewable naphtha and low-carbon ethanol. We also have projects under development to capture and store carbon dioxide and continue to explore opportunities such as sustainable aviation fuel.

VALERO RENEWABLE DIESEL FAQ'S
Renewable diesel is a fuel made from sustainable feedstock, such as used cooking oil. It is molecularly the same as petroleum-based diesel and it meets BS EN 15940 for diesel.
Renewable diesel is a clean-burning, drop-in fuel (chemically identical to standard diesel) that significantly cuts greenhouse gas emissions.
It is compatible with existing engines and infrastructure.
Diamond Green Diesel (DGD) is a joint venture between Valero Energy Corporation (through a subsidiary) and Darling Ingredients Inc. DGD is one of the world's largest renewable producers and following the opening of our latest facility located in Port Arthur Texas, annual production capacity is expected to reach 4.5 billion litres.
Our renewable diesel is produced from sustainable low-carbon waste derived feedstocks. Darling Ingredients Inc. is the largest collector and processor of used cooking oil in North America. Valero is also America's largest renewable ethanol producer.
Darling and Valero bring expertise to the operation of Diamond Green Diesel. Darling has extensive experience in pre-treating the feedstocks for further processing, and Valero has extensive experience in converting the pre-treated feedstock to renewable diesel and marketing transportation fuels to the marketplace.
This combination of an integrated feedstock supply and refining expertise, is unique in the renewable diesel industry with the efficient production of this low-carbon fuel, which we are now bringing to the UK.
Renewable diesel contains only hydrogen and carbon in a paraffinic structure, which is exactly the same as that for the paraffins found in fossil-derived diesel. It is this structure, together with the absence of oxygen, which results in a very stable fuel that can be used in a diesel engine
as a stand-alone fuel or together with fossil diesel.
By far the most commonly used biodiesel used in the UK is Fatty Acid Methyl Ester (FAME). This product can be made using virgin plant-based oils or waste materials. It contains oxygen, which can adversely affect its stability. It only meets BS EN 590 when blended with fossil diesel up to 7 percent. The use of FAME in diesel fuel can impact the product's 'shelf life'.
Renewable diesel is better for the environment:
- Reducing greenhouse gas emissions
- Helping to reduce regulated exhaust tail-pipe emissions
- No engine modification is required: renewable diesel can be used as a direct alternative to fossil diesel
Valero renewable diesel will be available at Valero Cardiff Terminal, with first sales expected March 2023.
Valero renewable diesel is made entirely from waste. Hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) can be made with virgin vegetable feedstock.
Renewable diesel can be interchanged with regular diesel. In this way, it is a 'drop-in' fuel as it is suitable for the majority of diesel engines.
Valero are Zemo Partnership accredited under their Renewable Fuels Assurance Scheme (RFAS). Managed by Zemo Partnership, the scheme aims to verify claims made by companies supplying renewable fuels to heavy-duty vehicle and equipment operators regarding their product’s GHG emission savings and provenance of raw material feedstocks.
Customers who wish to issue their own Zemo certificates are required to join the RFAS themselves.

ISCC is a globally applicable sustainability certification system that covers all sustainable feedstocks, including agricultural and forestry biomass, circular and bio-based materials and renewables.
We will be using ISCC certified feedstocks to make our renewable diesel, and both Diamond Green Diesel production plants are ISCC EU certified as Processing Units.
Certificate Numbers: EU-ISCC-Cert-US201-70601957 and EU-ISCC-Cert-US201-70601959
Yes, it meets BS EN 15940 for paraffinic diesel fuel.
It is already used across multiple regions including the US, Canada, Europe and Asia.
Valero Energy Corporation, through its subsidiaries (collectively, “Valero"), is a multinational manufacturer and mar keter of petroleum-based and low-carbon liquid transportation fuels and petrochemical products. Valero owns 15 petroleum refineries located in the U.S., Canada and the U.K. with a combined throughput capacity of approximately 3.2 million barrels per day and 12 ethanol plants with a combined production capacity of approximately 1.6 billion gallons (6 billion litres) per year.
